About the Market

River People Farmers Market

Statement of Purpose

The River People Farmers Market brings to the community of Astoria and its surrounding communities a vital resource: a true farmers market focused on making fresh produce and local food products more available to North Coast residents.

There is a great need in our North Coast communities for more access to fresh, healthy food, especially for lower-income residents. As well, local small farms and ranches, part-time producers, fishers, and other food producers need easier, affordable market access in an atmosphere that will foster business development and encourage economic growth.

North Coast Food Web is partnering with the Astoria Coop, The Blue Scorcher Bakery, Coast Community Radio and Oregon State Extension University Clatsop County to bring the first of many planned regional farmers markets to the community of Astoria in order to make the direct connection between farmer, rancher and fishers and local consumers easier and economically beneficial for all.

Goals of the River People Farmers Market

  • This will be a weekday afternoon market taking place on Thursday afternoons from 3-7 pm, June through September.
  • Only fresh, farm grown produce and flowers, farm raised and eggs, farm-grown plant starts, locally caught fish, and producer made value-added or ready-to-consume food products will be sold.
  • Producers are required to produce what they sell.  Farm and business inspections will be carried out by the market advisory board to ensure that no wholesale products are being sold at the market, and that businesses are well-run and comply with local and state health codes.
  • Vendor fees will be charged as a flat rate, either $35 per week, $30 a week (paid in 2 installments, first on June 1 and second and August 1) or $400 for the whole season (paid in full on June 1).
  • SNAP cards and Senior and WIC nutrition coupons will be accepted at the market, and strong efforts will be made to promote the market to low-income families as a source of healthy fresh food.
  • Booth space will be made available each week to local nonprofit organizations at no cost so that they may promote their work to the local community.
  • Education about fresh food preparation and recipes will be provided by the market information booth to encourage greater consumption of fresh whole foods.
